RESEARCH AND PRACTICE-BASED RESEARCH NETWORK (PBRN)

Practice-Based Research Network

The Colorado Springs Osteopathic Foundation coordinates a Practice-based Research Network for the FP residencies. The goals of the PBRN are: 1) To promote the competency of professional development and 2) To help residencies better deal with common clinical problems. This program is NOT designed to compete nor replace with other practice-based network activities (i.e., CareNet, etc.).

The PBRN supports the following types of projects:

Research Category Types of research benefits of research
Descriptive Incidence of disease prevalence in FP residencies, Complexity of patients in a residency (i.e., average number of medications or diagnosis per patient), Underserved patients seen by FP residencies 1. Evidence for continued support by state/host institution
2. Better understanding of patient population served which may improve delivery of care
Interventional New ways of delivering care to diabetic patients (i.e., team approach), use of supplements in treating hypercholesterolemia (i.e., fish oil) 1. Development of more efficient means of healthcare delivery for common problems
2. Identification of less costly, effective means of chronic disease management
Dissemination of medical information Use of palm devices to disseminate EBM/research information, use of flow charts to aid in following guidelines in disease management 1. Improve information management
2. Help in making healthcare delivery current and efficient

We will support other types of research on a case-by-case basis.

The Center for Osteopathic Education PBRN research projects need to be practical, address common residency problems and clearly lead to improved care. Evaluation criteria for proposed research projects include the following:

1. Must address a common residency issue
2. Must ultimately lead to improved patient care
3. If interventional project, must use intervention that can be used readily in clinical practice if successful
4. Must be based on sound research protocol

The Colorado Springs Osteopathic Foundation coordinates support for this network, but does not serve as the lead organization for each project. The Foundation is willing to help organize/develop research projects, aid in data collection, provide statistical evaluation of results, and aid in dissemination of research findings. This support is at no charge to the participating programs. If costs are incurred in a research project (i.e., materials, medications) the Foundation works with the network to help with funding or assist in seeking grant support from outside agencies.
