Family Practice In-House Research

A Shared Vision and a Look to the Future
For many years, the CSOF conducted an in-house family medicine residency program. One of the unique educational goals of this program was for residents to learn and develop family practice-based research skills. It was one of the few family practice residencies that included an actual research requirement. Each resident selected a research topic within his or her own area of interest, developed a protocol, collected and analyzed data, and wrote a paper of publishable quality. Opportunity was also afforded for residents to present the results of their research at professional meetings and regional research forums. Residents received instruction and practical experience in critical review of the medical research and clinical literature via a formal residency course entitled Research Analysis in Family Practice. Monthly research reviews and journal club sessions allowed residents to refine their presentation skills before an audience of professional peers. This rich experiential background now carries over to elective enrichment sessions in the CSOF Family Medicine Collaborative Program (link) and the Faculty Development Program (link). These can be arranged for medical education programs (including undergraduate, postgraduate, fellowship, and faculty development) by request. For more information, e-mail at csof@csof.org or call (719) 635-9057.

Following is a list of resident and fellow research projects conducted from 1995 to 2006. Titles with an asterisk are those which have been published and for which reprints are available through the above contacts.
